Reaching the Terrible Two's a Year Early

My last baby, my darling son will be one in just a few days…and he is letting everyone know. Not only is he clapping, waving and saying “uh oh” in context, but he is throwing temper tantrums. Full on temper tantrums. At just under a year, we are experiencing early onset of the terrible twos or something. I am calling this stage the OMIGOD ONES.
Take a pencil away- meltdown, stop him from stealing his sister’s food- screaming and crying ensue, foil his plans to pet smother the cat- epic fit. Oh, and then there’s the scratching and biting. Honestly, I don’t think he’s biting out of frustration (yet), rather, he just thinks it’s funny to find a piece of skin, my nipples being his favorite, and clamp down as hard as he can. When I shriek in pain and pull him off of me, he then cries as though he’s  the victim. OMIGOD.
Earlier today, he found a broken crayon and decided it would make a lovely snack. I took the crayon as soon as I saw him, and he began to throw a fit. I watched in amazement (terror?) that my baby was having a tantrum, a throw yourself on the ground writhing and screaming tantrum. I promptly gave him a toothbrush to play with and all was right with his world. Until….I noticed a chunk of crayon in his mouth. Removing it caused another, but much milder fit. I think he was still distracted with the toothbrush.
At the risk of sounding like I have come down with momnesia and  think my kids are better than they really are, I honestly do not remember K or G acting like this so young. Perhaps it’s because his siblings are toddlers he is going to hit these stages early. Either that, or I am frightened for what the future holds. No, it’s the first one. It has to be, or this mama’s moving out. ;)

  1. Oh man, I feel ya! My baby just turned one and I swear some of his meltdowns are just ridiculous. I'm just hoping that in the next few months he'll grow out of it!

  2. Cannon is definitely worse than Cole in the tantrum respect. He kicks and punches and pushes things out of the way, and Cole just never did that. He also attacks his big brother with such gusto that I feel sorry for Cole when he tries to defend himself. I foresee many holes in my walls as they get older.

  3. How is he already one!?!?!? I remember texting you around the clock asking if he'd made his grand appearance yet!

  4. My almost 18 month old is pretty much the same. Tantrum city if he doesn't get his way... and I really don't know how to deal with it. I need to go buy some parenting books obviously! Lately, it's head butting and foot stomping and whining at my house. le sigh.
